So here is the discussion. I wanted to buy a chair for my home desk, a common chair for computer work as well as general sitting area. When i chatted with my flatmate, he discouraged me from buying one since i am not sure how long i would be using the new chair. The agrument , according to him, is this

Cost of the chair is x dollars.
Life of the chair is 3 years at the most.
Duration of usage per day is max 5 hours.
So, you would make max usage of the chair is when cost per hour is x/(3*365*5).

For a normal 50$ chair, that would amount to .009 dollars, slightly less that one cent per hour.

Since i would not be using it more than year at the most, and resale value of a chair is zero (according to him), my per hour cost would be slightly less than three cents per hour. That is almost 330% higher than actual cost. Now considering that i am thinking of buying an 100$ chair, we can safely assume i am paying something like 660% more than necessary( according to him) .

This is my argument. Let me assume the same numbers are correct and i would be spending the same amount of dollars per hour. I need a chair, comfortable since i don't have one. The intagiable benefits of having a good chair is better posture among other benefits. Another idea is that i need to buy one sooner or later, so why not sooner ( thus taking advantage of the whole year of use) than buying it at a later stage where it would not be of any use. Moreover i am assuming that i would have a small resale value at the end of my use. Thus i believe the intagibles outweigh the tangiables and the investment is worth it. Also into consideration is that the last chair i brought was used and i further used it for another 3 and half years before giving it away (I was actually meaning to throw it away, however an old couple were interested in using it, thus the chair go more life out of it than i imagined.) And i paid around 20$ for it. That according to his calculations would amount to

20/(3.5 *365* 5)= .0031 ( almost one third of a cent) per hour of usage. !!!

These is the photo of the chair i want to buy ... 99.00$
