Lying in bed, I started to think of the differences between childhood and adult life in the modern world. Ofcourse, there are similarities between both phases of life, you are after all the same person. What I was wondering was about the experiences of higher stress in adult life than during childhood. There are many reasons that one can discuss at length but what I started thinking about is the effect of higher education on the thought process as an adult.

As an adult, you gather information about the whole around you. But as a child, you do the same. The differences is ofcourse in the nature of information, i.e., more inquisitive nature of a child learning perhaps languages and early human customs and traditions followed by adults surrounding him compared to gathering of information in a more structured manner as an adult. And considering that the amount of work a brain does is the same during both periods of the time, same 24 hours per day, I wonder what is the major difference between a child and an adult.

opinion seems to come first and foremost in my mind. I seem to have an opinion on everything from the Palestine-Israel war and Kashmir to how I want my hot tea to what is the best method to run a company. Opinion forming is encouraged in higher education, if you don't have an opinion, then you don't know knowledge in that matter and visa versa. You need to have a opinion on the discovery of United States by Columbus, why slave plantations worked in certain parts of the world where as they failed in others, why were salves liberated. I could go on and on about various issues the society expects an educated, well informed adult to have. The society at large determines your evaluation by the opinions you give. The more variety of subjects you have opinions about, the better. The more informed your opinions are, the better.

In the quest of finding more information, knowledge and thus more opinions, human beings routinely fall into categories that speak more about them as a society than as individuals. A typical scenario played out nowadays is if you are against war, you are against American soldiers in the war. Or even worst still, if you are against bush, you are against democracy in the united states. The race towards becoming more "opinionated" is leading to becoming more "stereotyped".

Stereotyping can have both negative aspects as well as positive ones. In the positive side, you expect say, "teachers and nurses to be honest and friendly" where as "lawyers and salesperson to be dishonest and untrustworthy". And we are repeatedly taught that more information would lead to less stereotyping. Tell that to an three year old. He or she might not even know the word stereotype, but would act in a manner that would put all the educated and opinionated world to shame.

For those of who don't know, I am unemployed (Between jobs as they say, or temporary unemployment, or working unemployed.) Two conclusions can be derived from that statement. One, I need a job. Two, I have a lot of time to think.

I will go into the second statement as the first statement is self-evident. Since my graduation, I have been thinking, (not that I did not before, but more thinking for the sake of thinking than broader task-oriented thinking i.e. how do I finish this essay etc) in almost very direction a mind can go. However most of the thinking, for me now, is career based and what steps I need to take to further attain a better, more enriched life. I do not take this matter lightly, since any misstep can prove to be costly in the long run.

From my point of view, looking at the future at this time and space, I see two paths of career. One is pure academic and the second option is industry. Academic careers are more theory based, a lot of thinking and more towards a position of "distribution of knowledge" either it be in research based firms and division or general academic positions such as professors. The second part is industry. What I mean by industry is "taking the theory and putting it into practice" or atleast try to do the same. This is the path chosen by many; because it gives you something that the other path does not. Instant income. By choosing a path of finding a job; and hoping to make a career from that job; people assume they would get constant stream of income and hopefully, fulfill their desires through their continued progression in the society. Those in the academic side have similar purpose, however, their advancement in the fields of knowledge depend on their personal advancement of knowledge and learning. Both paths have their own pros and cons, of which I will not indulge into, purely because I don't know much about the pros and cons.

As with everything you think about, the particular time and space around you is of the upmost importance, since great ideas are purely unattaible dreams in an hostile environment. The difference between learning institutions in United States and India is the amount of importance theory places in the role. United States's learning institutions place a premium on practical nature of the theory, where as the countries like India, the importance is given to the theory part. Once again, the debate between which method of learning is important is wide and the views are varied.

Since I have learnt from both ends of the spectrum, I am torn inbetween them even more. Although the ideas of practical nature of knowledge attainment as in learn-as-you-work nature appeal to me in certain subjects like general business, subjects like economics and even basic computer science need a strong theorical basis before you can advance to higher stages of the field. I have been able to get a compromise between the two different ergs I routinely face by deciding to do both. My ideal career path would have a full time work and a part-time study period. Need not be 6 units of study, maybe 3. Maybe just going and learning some "creative arts" course. Ofcourse any course that would advance enrichment of my life would be welcome.

Ofcourse higher education like an masters or PhD can be full time study and part time work if need be. Frankly, all this thought process came into about because I miss the study atmosphere with class rooms and lectures etc. Maybe later in life, I might be comfortable working only, or my job would provide all the enrichment I am talking about, I don't know.

Taking a slightly bigger view of the situation, I am reminded of the dialog used in Good will Hunting, the movie where Robin Williams (Sean, a psychiatrist) talks to Matt Damon (Will Hunting, a genius student). From the time I heard it first till today, this conversation and the movie reminded me the limitations of books, knowledge and modern education.

Sean: Thought about what you said to me the other day, about my painting. Stayed up half the night thinking about it. Something occurred to me... fell into a deep peaceful sleep, and haven't thought about you since. Do you know what occurred to me?
Will: No.

Sean: You're just a kid, you don't have the faintest idea what you're talkin' about.

Will: Why thank you.

Sean: It's all right. You've never been out of Boston.

Will: Nope.

Sean: So if I asked you about art, you'd probably give me the skinny on every art book ever written. Michelangelo, you know a lot about him. Life's work, political aspirations, him and the pope, sexual orientations, the whole works, right? But I'll bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You've never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling; seen that. If I ask you about women, you'd probably give me a syllabus about your personal favorites. You may have even been laid a few times. But you can't tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman and feel truly happy. You're a tough kid. And I'd ask you about war, you'd probably throw Shakespeare at me, right, "once more unto the breach dear friends." But you've never been near one. You've never held your best friend's head in your lap, watch him gasp his last breath looking to you for help. I'd ask you about love, you'd probably quote me a sonnet. But you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes, feeling like God put an angel on earth just for you. Who could rescue you from the depths of hell. And you wouldn't know what it's like to be her angel, to have that love for her, be there forever, through anything, through cancer. And you wouldn't know about sleeping sitting up in the hospital room for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes, that the terms "visiting hours" don't apply to you. You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself. And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much. And look at you... I don't see an intelligent, confident man... I see a cocky, scared shitless kid. But you're a genius Will. No one denies that. No one could possibly understand the depths of you. But you presume to know everything about me because you saw a painting of mine, and you ripped my fucking life apart. You're an orphan right?

[Will nods]

Sean: You think I know the first thing about how hard your life has been, how you feel, who you are, because I read Oliver Twist? Does that encapsulate you? Personally... I don't give a shit about all that, because you know what, I can't learn anything from you, I can't read in some fuckin' book. Unless you want to talk about you, who you are. Then I'm fascinated. I'm in. But you don't want to do that do you sport? You're terrified of what you might say. Your move, chief.

"Does Education Raise Productivity ,or Just Reflect it? Human capital vs Signalling"

Does education increase productivity or acts as a signalling method for employers of more productive individuals. How does the return on education reflect on the higher productive gains of the employees, i.e. higher educated is more productive? And finally, how does making basic education complasoury change the wage levels and higher productivity expectations of the employers.

The conslusion? Effects of education on wage was an approx 10% increase per year of education. On effects of education were due to enhanced productivity(learnt while at school) is inconsulsive. The study found that education differences simply reflect pre-existing ability differences. That is they are a pure signalling effect for employers for better workers.

And finally the question, does educational inequality decreased by complusory education. No. In the long term, the well-to-do will get more educated/specialized leading the lower classes stuck with complusory education. While basic education is necessary interms of health reasons, sanity, legal reasons ( you need to know what you are signing), it does not mean increased wages . Take for example, in the middle ages, nobody would write anything except for the well to do. Soon common folk started writing, but to keep ahead higher classes got more educated, learnt latin and stuff. The inequality remained in terms of wages. Might not be the best example, but you get the idea.

By the way, i got this material from, "The economic Journal,Nov 2004" where they also mentioned this book, Our Modern Times:The new Nature of Capitalism in the information age by Cohen (Daniel). Want to see if i can read it somewhere.

I came upon this comparison between Indian girlfriends on blogger today. I am not sure how much this is true, but it hella funny. In between, i am trying out this new tag system, which seems to be quite a topic of discussion on the blogging sites. Here is blog that uses this tag system quite often, and his opinion on it. I daresay, his blog is one of the pleasant ones.

On more blog related news, Charlie Rose had a discussion of bloggers and their effects on this show. Quite an interesting discussion and it led me to think about the effects of information economics. I will write about it more when i read about it.

Talking about reading, I, once upon a time, made this list of books i read. The list is too old and i plan to get you guys a updated one sometime in the future.

Just read this news article on somebody in dubai winning some gold. Started to think what would i do if i won something substantial. I had a conversation with my mom regarding our luck on winning huge sums of money, a pure statistical impossibility i said. I have a great belief that nothing in life is free and stuff you think is free, you have either earned it or you will have to pay it back at a later date with interest. However, since this is a blog, and i get to dream about stuff that never happens in real life, I decided to go ahead and make a list of the things i would do if i won a substantial amount of money.

The money , of course, would be divided into three groups. One would be re-invested in names of family members ( one in name of two parents, one in the name of my sister's family, i.e. not to my sister but maybe her children or grandchildren on the condition that she approves.,)

The second part of the money would go for a foundation/trust/charity that would give free food/clothing/shelter to the deserving individuals in scientific/artistic endeavors. This segment is short term help only and the given as a stop gap solution so that people can take advantage of the third part of my money.

The third part of the money, which i am hoping to do even if i don't get a winning lottery ticket but am lucky in career prospect, goes to finance initial capital for low cost/ high volume products and services that benefit the population of the world. Present day examples of such endeavors would be the Grumman bank of Bangladesh and research grants for low cost medicines. An emphasis on information flow and accountability is absolutely necessary.

That said, what about me! I will be more than satisfied if i am able to do these three things with free money i get. As for the money i earn, i got the eye for the private island in Bahamas.

So here is the discussion. I wanted to buy a chair for my home desk, a common chair for computer work as well as general sitting area. When i chatted with my flatmate, he discouraged me from buying one since i am not sure how long i would be using the new chair. The agrument , according to him, is this

Cost of the chair is x dollars.
Life of the chair is 3 years at the most.
Duration of usage per day is max 5 hours.
So, you would make max usage of the chair is when cost per hour is x/(3*365*5).

For a normal 50$ chair, that would amount to .009 dollars, slightly less that one cent per hour.

Since i would not be using it more than year at the most, and resale value of a chair is zero (according to him), my per hour cost would be slightly less than three cents per hour. That is almost 330% higher than actual cost. Now considering that i am thinking of buying an 100$ chair, we can safely assume i am paying something like 660% more than necessary( according to him) .

This is my argument. Let me assume the same numbers are correct and i would be spending the same amount of dollars per hour. I need a chair, comfortable since i don't have one. The intagiable benefits of having a good chair is better posture among other benefits. Another idea is that i need to buy one sooner or later, so why not sooner ( thus taking advantage of the whole year of use) than buying it at a later stage where it would not be of any use. Moreover i am assuming that i would have a small resale value at the end of my use. Thus i believe the intagibles outweigh the tangiables and the investment is worth it. Also into consideration is that the last chair i brought was used and i further used it for another 3 and half years before giving it away (I was actually meaning to throw it away, however an old couple were interested in using it, thus the chair go more life out of it than i imagined.) And i paid around 20$ for it. That according to his calculations would amount to

20/(3.5 *365* 5)= .0031 ( almost one third of a cent) per hour of usage. !!!

These is the photo of the chair i want to buy ... 99.00$

And these are the specs

Vinyl Extreme Office Chair

  • Pneumatic seat height adjustment
  • Perforated lumbar comfort zone
  • Ergo-contoured seat and back
  • Double tube arms
  • Assembly required.

    Checking if pictures work

    M.T.T.S.F

    Another review after reading HBR

Today I read about the importance of having psychological help in a company and the different stress related diseases that are attributed to high stress jobs. Is it ethically good to let go of an individual who has mental or physical problems or should time and money be invested in such a case. What are the legal problems associated with that and more over what the necessary guildlines are are should be formulated in order to help the company better respond to cases such as that.

The second article that comes to my mind is the article of what is important for a business manager in terms of information and which information is mission critical. Can some information be available in terms of real time and does such information help the company and the manager better manage their daily tasks and crisis. How can information over load be managed by the information system and how critical is an information system towards such a situation. Do managers get the information they want when they want??

The third article is about the R and D and social networks that attribute to such a situation. The social “gatekeepers”, having max patents and are social gateways to the rest of the community, are the most important people the organization would benefit from. The idea is very similar to the one of the “tipping point”?? Where one person is usually the person who is the gateway to the community to which we belong. (We know everybody due to this person or something that the person did in the past) For example, my connector is the EOP job I have, which enables me to know so many people. Similar connections are through Ahmed.

I worte this a week ago after reading the following book.

Benjamin Franklin. An American Life Written by Walter Isaac.

The book describes the life of Benjamin Franklin and through him, the virtues of America that embodied both America since than, and through the influence of this country towards the rest of the modern world.

It is hard to describe a book which is so large and encompassing as this book is. So let me start by just writing them. As they say, “the secret to writing is to write. Words that come without thinking is the best first draft there is.” Franklin is many people combined into one. Although mainly stated as a printer, he is first I believe a writer. It is that attribute of him that gives the public exposure which I doubt just being a printer would get. He is an excellent writer with two basic habits. One for organizing people around him into groups and clubs and other semi-political groups that led him to improve and expand on his own knowledge base. The second is his deep dedication towards improvement of society. Everything he did had these two aspects. He tried everything to improve his life through observation and practical thought. His discoveries and inventions that the side result of his sincere devotion to improve his and his friends life style. Most of the social projects had that factor. He wanted books so he started a library. He wanted freedom among his fellow country, so he fought for it. Social service was for him, a self-improvement project which extended into his neighborhood, and finally to the whole country. The diplomat that he was, he wanted to live and let live, however he was fearlessly independent in both thought process. He realized that if you can give something, you can be more independent that you would be without giving out anything.

What I realized more and more, by reading these biographies, is that life is more about individual journeys than one journey. It is heroic feat that comes in front every so often that you need to accept the challenge. The life of Franklin can be divided into two big sets, one as a printer and the second one as the social/statesman/politician that we all know him for. The tools you build daily, the skills you learn in your early part of your life are the oxygen supply for the journey. You need the right kind of skills and tools to succeed in your tasks. You could not send Franklin without the skills of diplomat and skilled negotiator that he had into France nor the constitutional summit. How do you learn these skills? You learn by experience. You learn by trial and error. But you also learn by theoretical deductions. There is no manual for living however you do have the experience of those who followed the similar paths before you to look upon.

Lets look at this particular individual. The ability to maintain relationships with people of so many different kinds, still maintaining his living standards is hard to do. How do you work at the face of opposition and when do you have to give up. I show so many cases where a third person could clearly see the path he was heading would not be successful but he carried on. One the other hand, if he had gave up, the achievable would have left unachieved. A serious issue, indeed. A detailed through process is needed to be developed. This will help the person get a clearer vision of the path he is trying to conquer.

This is what i wrote a couple of days ago , after watching the apprentice on the television. Some insights on business unsaid rules.

    • Have a social cause for your mission
    • Have multiple customer base
    • Maximize your skill set.
    • Simple products with slightly different twist are better than complicated designs.
    • Never put your head in the line when you don’t have to.
    • Indecisiveness is worst than a bad decision because it would be harmful for both you and the people you interact with.
    • Organization works better sometimes, where as, chaos works better at other times.
    • Dress appropriately
    • Always look out for new customers and new representatives to push forward your commitment.
    • In a game, where only one person can win, be that person. If team work is necessary, work for the team and work for yourself.
    • Appropriate comedy sells. Sex can backfire seriously.
    • Watch your back, be quite when you need to and speak when appropriate.
    • The team can work with you when you can effectively communicate with them. If you cannot communicate effectively, you are a liability.
    • Be prepared for every circumstance. And jump up to the idea when the time comes.

This is the link for for my earlier blogs, written in 2003. Most of what i have written in 2004 is still in my laptop, undated. I will post them as and when i get some time. I still have to figure out a method of incorporting older blogs into this new method of catorgizing blogs. I also plan to get a basic website running as soon as possible.

Umm...so much to write...don't know where to start!!!

    Hi

Blogging is something I wanted to do for long time. Briefly started more as something that would remind me of what thought process is, how is formed and how views change; I got more and more attracted to blogging as more an autobiographical project. Yes, unlike usual biographical memoirs , I would like it to reflect more as an passing observer, trying to get "my two worthless cents" and since many people wanted to give "a penny for my thoughts". See there is commerce at every stage of living.

Which brings me to my second piece of writing. I love economics, business and everything that goes along with it. I believe all root causes for geo-politics in this world is directly connected to basic human needs both physical such as food and shelter as well as emotional such as status and pride. The process of economics, along with the process of business, is an intergral part of the process of lives with are studied in the subjects like philosophy and much more. You will see articles to that and many more subjects in the upcoming posts on my blog.

Ok, I told you why I wanted to write, what I wanted to write about; so the question left is the where do I get the content from. In a simple word, the environment that surrounds me. That is not a good enough answer. Let me redefine it. The environment around me which consists of books, intellectually stimulating television among other life events.
